IndyCar won't return to Vegas in 2012

IndyCar won't return in 2012 to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where a fiery crash claimed the life of English racer Dan Wheldon in October.

The IndyCar series had been scheduled to close its 2012 season at the speedway on October 14.

But officials of IndyCar and the track said Thursday that the new IndyCar vehicle needs more testing at the venue before they race there again.

"We feel we need to give our technical team ample time to conduct thorough testing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, once we complete our ongoing investigation into the 15-car accident during the October 16 race at the track," said IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard.

IndyCar came in for heavy criticism after Wheldon died in the Las Vegas crash, with some saying the high-banked oval, where cars reached speeds of up to 370 kilometres per hour, wasn't suitable for open-wheel racing.

Indianapolis 500 champion Wheldon died of injuries received in a 15-car crash, leaving a wife and two small children.

Las Vegas Speedway president Chris Powell noted in the aftermath of Wheldon's death that his track met every IndyCar Series regulation.
