Australian Mark Webber powered his Red Bull to victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday to take the championship lead from Britain's Lewis Hamilton, who retired from the race.

Webber finished the 70-lap race, the 12th in the 19-leg Formula One world championship, 17.821secs ahead of Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso of Spain.

In third place was Webber's teammate, German Sebastian Vettel, who started from pole position but was frustrated and left angry at the end of the race after being upstaged by the Australian winner.

Webber's fourth win of the season means he takes over the championship lead from McLaren driver Hamilton, who slid out of contention after less than a third of the way into the race with a gear transmission problem.

Webber now has a total of 161 pts, with Hamilton second on 157 and Vettel on 151.
